There are currently more than 2 billion smartphone users in the world today. In 2017 the mobile app market is expected to be worth $77 billion with over 268 billion downloads. That number is expected to grow year on year, with more people buying and downloading more apps each day.

Additionally, the smartphone market has seen huge growth and is not expected to slow down. People love the convenience smart phones offer, especially through the apps available on the market. Users are able to simplify and automate menial tasks, making it an attractive market to enter.

Many startups have emerged catering to the needs of this market, with larger companies joining in as well.

So how do they come up with these app ideas and can you do it too?

Here is a list of thing to consider and some strategies you can employ to generate new app ideas:

Look at what’s already out there:

With over 2.8 million on Google’s play store and 2.2 million on Apple, you have a vast library of potential ideas and inspiration. If you’re unsure of what niche to enter, you can use the categories available to research further.

Once you’ve found a particular niche/industry you want to enter you can do one of two things:

Clone = Use the existing apps as template and design an app for yourself or your company. This is by far the easiest and quickest method

Improvement = Use the existing apps and improve on what’s already available. You will have to identify the faults of apps available and then try to improve them. This could be streamlining the app design, making it faster, providing more functionality etc. Add in some extra features and your branding to differentiate it further and you will end up with a proven app concept with and existing user demand.

Solve a problem:

Most of the successful apps on the market solve a specific problem for a user. For example, they may make monotonous everyday tasks easier, they may provide communication tools or they may give specific information (news, market updates, price changes etc.) saving time and effort of manually searching for the user.

Look for problems in your industry or area of expertise first, as chances are you are already aware of the challenges present and can create an app to address these challenges.

If you’re in a crowded industry, with already a large number of apps available, do not be discouraged. There is usually more than one way to solve a problem and you can use the existing app offerings as a starting point and improve them, as discussed earlier.

Do Market Research:

If you’re struggling to find a significant problem or gap in the market that your app can address, one of the easiest ways to find out is to ask your user base.

Brainstorm: You can begin by brainstorming ideas with family, friends and colleagues. This is a very easy way to start the process and begin collecting potential ideas

Search on Social Media: You can extend your reach by contacting and surveying people on social media.

Find people that are interested in your niche/industry as ask them to share their opinions. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Reddit make it super easy to find a specific type of audience.

Use your existing user base: If you’re an established brand or an individual with some form of following, you can leverage your user base to generate ideas. People always appreciate being asked their opinions, so create a survey to get new app idea.

Conclusion:

Essentially, coming up with a new app idea is all about research. The more time you spend analyzing and researching the specific app market you want to enter, the more likely you are to creating successful app idea.
